Free Advertising

Continuing our discussion of the various ways to build an NSP business, in this lesson we will focus on:

Free Advertising

Free advertising isn't really free, because it requires your time, but it goes without saying that free advertising could be the most cost-effective way of promoting your NSP business. There are many ways that you can promote your business for free. Use your imagination! I will mention a few ways below that will hopefully get you thinking.

I have already discussed networking, or word-of-mouth advertising. Other ways of promoting your business for free (some of these I will discuss in further detail in later lessons) include public speaking, teaching nutrition classes and posting notices on bulletin boards.

Check all of the "health food" grocery stores in your area and you will probably find that they all have a bulletin board for the posting of public messages. A simple message on a note card stating that you are a "Distributor for Nature's Sunshine Products" along with your name, phone number and web page address is all that is needed. Be aware that most stores clear their bulletin boards once a week, so you will need to visit them every week to repost your notice. (Keep track of your mileage because it can be a tax-deductible business expense.) Find out when they clear their boards and try to post your notice immediately afterward to increase the amount of time that it will be posted. While you are at it, post your notice on the bulletin boards of the conventional grocery stores in your neighborhood as well.

Many local community-oriented radio and television stations are looking for interesting people to interview on the air. I have known several distributors who worked out very favorable arrangements with their local radio stations even acquiring their own weekly radio show. Sometimes a package deal is worked out where you buy some radio time and receive some radio time for free. The distributors I know who have done this have built phenomenal businesses as this is a fantastic way of bringing in a constant flow of high-quality referrals!

You can let local clubs, such as the Kiwanis club, gardening clubs, self-help clubs, etc. know that you are available for public speaking. These groups are always looking for speakers and there is no topic that is hotter than health topics - especially natural health topics. (I will discuss this topic in further detail in a later lesson.)

If you are involved with a church you have many excellent networking opportunities. Some churches even produce a directory of member business owners so that their members can support the businesses of other church members.

Don't neglect your existing customers! Many people get so involved with bringing in new customers that they ignore the best source of new business that is right in front of them. Your existing customers have already proven themselves, so they certainly deserve your time and attention. Upsell your existing customers by educating them about other products that you offer. Work at retaining your existing customers and you will not have to work so hard at bringing in new customers. Ask your customers for referrals and save hundreds and perhaps thousands of advertising dollars.

In this lesson I have only scratched the surface of the many opportunities that may be available to you for promoting your business for free. Hopefully I have given you some ideas, and perhaps you will be able to come up with some of your own.
